This week commenced the awkward re-learning-how-to-dress-for-cold-weather dance. Am I the only one who struggles with switching gears from sandals to sneakers, tee-shirts to sweaters, no coat to where the heck are my coats? I feel like a 4 year old learning how to tie my shoes. But the first week of chilly fall weather also means the opening weekend of…. (drum roll, please!)…. Hot Apple Cider and Bourbon! This drink is perfect for frosty evening football tailgates or outdoor activities of any description. It really brings the fun.
You can bother with a lot of spices, syrups, and citruses if you like, but it’s quite good with just the cider and your bourbon of choice. In other words, don’t fret about buying a lot of ingredients for this drink. I had a lemon in the fridge which I squeezed into the mix, and a cinnamon stick is a natural addition as well. But if you don’t have this stuff lying around, no problem!
Simply heat up the cider and any other trappings you want to add (lemon juice, orange juice, maple syrup, honey, cinnamon sticks, ginger, etc). You don’t want to add the bourbon to the pot because you will boil off the alcohol. Pour the hot cider into mugs, and then add your bourbon. Stir it up and enjoy your weekend!
Recipe (makes 4 cocktails):
- 4 cups of apple cider
- Juice of one lemon
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 cup of bourbon
